Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala’s campaign at the WTA 1000 Miami Open came to an early close after a straight-sets defeat to world No. 14 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-2, on Monday.
Eala, ranked 31st and a semifinalist in last year’s edition, struggled to find her rhythm against the in-form Muchova, who wrapped up the match in just an hour. The 5-foot-11 Czech, a former world No. 8 and recent champion at the Qatar Open, advanced to face either No. 8 Mirra Andreeva or No. 10 Victoria Mboko in the next round.
Andreeva earlier overcame Czech Marie Bouzkova, 7-6 (4), 6-2, while Canada’s Mboko dispatched Anastasia Zakharova, 6-1, 7-5.

In other Miami Open results, top seed Aryna Sabalenka cruised past American Caty McNally, 6-4, 6-3, setting up a fourth-round clash with China’s Qinwen Zheng, who rallied to defeat Madison Keys, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Third seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan also progressed, beating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, 6-3, 6-4, to book a meeting with Australia’s Talia Gibson, who stunned American Iva Jovic, 6-2, 6-2.
The American contingent had a strong showing, with Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, and Hailey Baptiste all advancing. Gauff rallied past Alycia Parks, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1; Pegula dominated Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 6-2; Anisimova defeated Yulia Starodubtseva, 6-4, 6-2; and Baptiste pulled off an upset over No. 9 seed Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 7-5.
Other notable winners included Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea and Jaqueline Cristian, and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, who all secured their spots in the round of 16.
